DigitasLBi scoops 3 BIMA Awards for POLITICO EU Referendum Tracker


DigitasLBi took top honours in three categories: Advance Award for Small budget; Technology: Innovation; and Product and Service Design: Small budget.

When creating the POLITICO EU Referendum Tracker, DigitasLBi re-imagined the Apple Wallet as a dynamic content delivery mechanism which allowed the POLITICO EUROPE news team to send live updates to user’s phones via push notifications. The Apple Wallet app is pre-installed on all iPhones and is typically used for boarding passes, event tickets, and promotional vouchers. 

This innovative approach allowed Politico to provide readers with a convenient way to follow Britain's EU referendum before the vote, live on the night, and in the days after the vote. Crucially, DigitasLBi’s solution meant there was no need for users to download and install an application which would have been a considerable barrier for such a short-term event.

The EU Referendum Tracker allowed POLITICO EUROPE to generate app-like engagement without the expense of an app. It helped them to stand out from competing coverage and gave them the ability to break news as fast - if not faster - than the competition. It also grew POLITICO EUROPE’s audience in the UK, a country they had barely penetrated in early 2016.

More than 10,000 users downloaded the pass in the week leading up to the election night from 104 countries, with more than a third from the UK. Some 74% of the readers were new to POLITICO Europe.

The BIMA Awards are the longest standing and most prestigious digital awards in the UK. They seek to support and encourage great work in the British digital sector. The shortlist for 2017 featured a broad range of the leading practitioners in the digital space. Awards entries were submitted in April 2017 and subject to a rigorous judging process by a panel of expert judges.
